Development of sea urchin aquaculture depends on collaboration between science, industry, and community.
On the 6th September 2024, Deakin University hosted an event to bring researchers, industry, and community together for research presentations on urchin farming and kelp restoration. Attendees had the opportunity to taste urchins harvested from the sea and farmed on the shores of Port Phillip Bay.
The event included talks by Prof Tim Dempster, Assoc Prof David Francis, and Dr Prue Francis (Deakin University), as well as guest speaker Simon Branigan (The Nature Conservancy).
On the 19th of March 2019, a workshop was held at the University of Melbourne with participants from industry, government and the university sector to discuss the future of sea urchin aquaculture in Australia. The workshop involved presentations on Industry Perspectives and current Research and Development projects from across Australia, with distinguished guest speakers Yoshi Oyama and Prof. Hiroki Yagi.
